World Cup Watch Party: Sweden vs. The Netherlands

Sweden's quest to win the World Cup continues and in the semi-final they take on The Netherlands, for what can only be described as a colonial shakedown. Will Sweden once again lose to the Dutch like they did in New Sweden in 1655, or will Sweden prove to be better team and not walk in the footsteps of their forefathers? Head on over to the American Swedish Historical Museum to watch all of the action as some of the greatest soccer players in the world battle it out.

Toddler Time: The Dala Horse

Children who visit the museum love to see our larger than life wooden Dala horse sculpture. This month at Toddler Time, children will learn why the Dala horse is an iconic symbol of Sweden. They will hear the story of a child’s magical wooden carving that comes to life, go on a Dala horse hunt around the museum, and play games to build counting and language skills. Don’t miss this magical adventure!

A Turner in Jamestown

Immigration is the story of people and places, but we often forget how diverse these stories are. Instead, we focus on general pictures and the archetypical immigrant’s story as representative of millions of people. Similarly, it is easy to imagine the story of Scandinavian immigration to the United States as always being tied to the American West, envisioning families working their way to Illinois, Minnesota, or even further to the Pacific coast. But this is not the full story of the 2.3 million Scandinavians who came to the United States in the 1800s and early 1900s.
